South African Airways now offers Cabin Crew Training Programmes (for Cabin Crew Licensing purposes) to the general public.

The information below will tell you more about our course offering!  

 

 

  • South African Airways Cabin Crew Training is conducted by our approved Aviation Training Organisation, in terms of the South African Civil Aviation Regulations Part 141 (ATO registration No. CAA/0079).

    We pride ourselves on providing the highest standards of cabin crew training that enables Cabin Crew Members to develop the necessary skills to effectively manage any safety, medical or emergency situation on board, in accordance with internationally recognised standards.

    All Safety and Emergency Procedures, Aviation Medicine, Security, Crew Resource Management, Safety Management System and Dangerous Goods Training Programmes, are approved by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), as required.

    All training, assessment, remediation and moderation is conducted by qualified SACAA accredited Instructors and/or Cabin Designated Examiners, in line with regulatory requirements.

    Our inflight service training programmes are designed to meet local and international service delivery standards.

    During or following completion of our training programmes, learners undergo theory and practical assessments covering the training received. This is done in order to verify proficiency in carrying out cabin crew duties.

  • To commence training, you must be:

    • 18 years or older, and have a Matric/Grade 12 qualification
    • Be able to speak, read and write English
    • Be able to swim in water, with the aid of a life jacket
    • Be in possession of a valid Class 4 Medical Certificate (see further details below)
  • Our Cabin Crew Initial Training Course is a 42-day training programme. It includes the following components:

    Safety and Emergency Procedures Training (SEPT) Programme

    This programme includes the following components:

    • General Safety and Emergency Procedures
    • Aviation Security Training
    • Dangerous Goods Training (Category 11)
    • Crew Resource Management
    • Safety Management Systems Training
    • Flight and Duty Periods
    • Aircraft Initial Training for 1 aircraft type
    • Aircraft Familiarisation Visits
    • Practical Skills Practices
    • Theory and Practical Assessments
    • A Flight Deck Observation Flight
    • One Aircraft Familiarisation Training Flight on SAA, to any local or regional destination operated by South Africa Airways

     

    Aviation Medicine Training Programme

    This programme includes the following components:

    • First Aid Emergencies
    • Effects of High Altitude
    • Onboard Medical Equipment
    • Communicable Diseases
    • Fatigue Risk Management
    • Resuscitation Council of SA Accreditation
    • Practical Skills Practices
    • Theory and Practical Assessments

     

    Inflight Service Training Programme

    This programme includes the following components:

    • Image and Grooming
    • Business Etiquette
    • Overview of Cabin Crew Member Duties
    • Overview of Aircraft Service Procedures and Duties
    • Wine and Bar Service Training
    • Practical Skills Practices
    • Theory and Practical Assessments
    • An Aircraft Familiarisation Training Flight on SAA, to any local or regional destinations operated by South Africa Airways
    • Guidance on how to position yourself for a successful career as a Cabin Crew Member

     

    Completion of SACAA Theory Examination

    This includes:

    • SACAA Exam Preparation Session
    • Transport to the SACAA Offices to complete the SACAA Theory Examination.

     

    Attendance of all course components is compulsory.

     

    Certificates of Competency will be provided on successful completion of the various programmes.

    South African Airways will facilitate the processing of all Skills Tests by the SACAA and collect the relevant Cabin Crew Member (CCM) License Inserts, on behalf of each Learner (who is the CCM License Holder). These will be checked to ensure accuracy before handing them over to the Learner.

  • Our training is conducted in Johannesburg at South African Airways headquarters in Kempton Park.

    • Theoretical training is conducted in our SACAA accredited classrooms and
    • Practical training is conducted either on an actual aeroplane or in our cabin simulator that accurately represents the aeroplane in the items described by the SACAA Civil Aviation Regulations and Technical Standards requirements (in terms of layout of the cabin, type and location of seats, location, mode and operation of exits, location and type of safety equipment etc.);
    • Our Computer Based Training Centre is used for training and self-study purposes;
    • Our Fire Fighting and Smoke Training Simulators are used for the practical training;
    • A swimming pool is used for the practical training in water;

    Aeroplane familiarisation is carried out on an actual aeroplane on the Familiarisation (Training) Flight.

  • All training is delivered, via:

    • Instructor-led Learning;
    • E-Learning Modules;
    • Role Plays;
    • Simulations;
    • Presentations/multimedia interactive learning;
    • Group Work;
    • Group Discussions;
    • Self-Study;
    • Skills Practice Sessions on actual aeroplane or approved representative training device;
  • Eighteen (18) learners are accommodated per course.

  • The SAA Cabin Crew Initial Training Course is conducted at R15,200.00, per person, including VAT.

    The Course Cost includes:

    • All training manuals and training materials
    • All costs associated with theory and practical training and assessments (first attempt)
    • SACAA Theory Exam Fee.

    Tea and Coffee is available during training. 

    The Course Cost excludes:

    • All costs associated with obtaining the Class 4 Medical Certificate
    • Travel, meals and accommodation costs
    • Re-training and Re-assessment costs
    • SACAA CCM Licensing Fee.
    Successful completion of the training will not result in employment at SAA.

    Read through all the information in this section to understand the details regarding the SAA Cabin Crew Initial Training Programme.

    If you would like to attend one of our Cabin Crew Initial Training Courses, you have to:
    • Obtain your Class 4 Medical Certificate by arranging a medical examination with a SACAA accredited Medical Examiner. Refer to the SACAA website for the latest list of recommended examiners. A chest x-ray from a radiology department is required prior to booking a medical examination. If you would like to complete your medical examination with South African Airways, simply call the SAA Medical Department in Johannesburg, on 011 978 6221 for more information and to book an appointment. The cost of the Class 4 medical certificate obtained from the SAA Medical Department is R793.43 per person including VAT.

    Step 3

    Once you have obtained and completed all the documents above, email SAA via the email address, cabincrewtraining@flysaa.com to submit the following:
     
    1. A certified copy of your ID document
    2. A certified copy of your matriculation certificate
    3. A certified copy of the valid Class 4 Medical Certificate
    4. Course Registration Form
    5. Student Training Agreement
    6. SAA Security Clearance Indemnity Form
     
    By doing this, you will tentatively reserve your seat on the course dates you have selected.

    Note: We accept Course Registrations up to 10 working days prior to the scheduled start date of a course, provided there are seats available.  

    Step 4

    SAA will email you a quotation reflecting the total amount to be deposited, in full payment of the course. The SAA Bank account details will also be provided. 

    The reference number on the quotation MUST be included when making the payment via Bank deposit slip, EFT, etc.

    Note: The full payment is due prior to commencing training. 
    Payment must be made within 14 days of receiving the quotation.

    Cancellations will attract administration and/or cancellation charges

    Step 5

    Once you have completed the payment, email the proof of payment as soon as possible to cabincrewtraining@flysaa.com .
    This will confirm your seat on the course dates reflected on your Registration Form.
    SAA will communicate your confirmation on a course, in writing. 
    Please bring this confirmation with you on your first day of training!

    Please note that confirmation on a course will be on a ‘first-come-first-serve’ basis.
    Where a course is full, SAA will endeavour to accommodate you on the next available course of your choice.

    Step 6

    Look out for emails from SAA leading up to your first day of training.  We want to make sure that you are prepared and ready for your first day!
