SAA cancels flights to and from London, Frankfurt and Munich

Johannesburg. 16 April 2010.

SAA has cancelled a number of flights between South Africa, London, Frankfurt and Munich, scheduled to depart today.

Airport closures in London, Frankfurt and Munich come as a result of volcanic ash over European airspace hampering safe flying conditions.

SAA cancelled its flights to and from London yesterday, Thursday, 15th April, after the closure of Heathrow International Airport following a directive from European Air Traffic.

The closure of Frankfurt and Munich International airports followed today. Heathrow airport remains closed until conditions improve and are safe to air traffic.

The following SAA flights scheduled to operate today are now cancelled:

SA234 Johannesburg to London
SA236 Johannesburg to London
SA220 Cape Town to London
SA221 London to Cape Town
SA260 Johannesburg to Frankfurt
SA261 Frankfurt to Johannesburg
SA264 Johannesburg to Munich
SA265 Munich to Johannesburg
SA235 London to Johannesburg (departing on Saturday, 17th April)

Affected passengers can contact SAA reservations on (011) 978 1111 or 0861 606 606 or their travel agent for assistance with rebooking their flight on an alternative date or routing.

SAA will continue monitoring conditions and resume normal operations to the three airports as soon as it is deemed safe. At this stage there is no indication as to when conditions will be safe for air traffic.

SAA would again like to apologise to its customers for any inconvenience caused by these flight cancellations. We reiterate that the safety of passengers and crew is our main priority.
