Key Advice to Passengers During Peak Season

Travel Smart This Holiday Season with SAA: Key Advice for a Smooth Journey

The festive season is one of the busiest times for air travel. At SAA, we are passionate about making your journey as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Our friendly crew and ground staff are here to support you every step of the way. To help us serve you better and ensure a wonderful travel experience for all, please keep these important tips in mind:

  1. Enter your Voyager number when you make your booking

Passengers are reminded to enter their Voyager number at the time of booking or during check-in. Members will earn one mile for every R1.60 spent. Those who are not yet Voyager members are encouraged to register at www.flysaa.com.

  1. Check-In Online

Save time and avoid queues by using mobile or web check-in before arriving at the airport. This is the quickest way to secure your seat and boarding pass. Our digital platforms are designed for your convenience, reflecting our commitment to hassle-free travel.

  1. Arrive Early
    • Domestic flights: Arrive at least 2 hours before departure.
    • Regional and international flights: Arrive at least 3 hours before departure.
Early arrival helps reduce congestion and ensures a stress-free start to your trip. Our team is always ready to assist you from the moment you arrive.
  1. Go Straight to Security

Once you’ve checked in, proceed directly to security screening and then to your boarding gate. This keeps passenger flow smooth and prevents delays. Our staff are on hand to guide you and answer any questions.

  1. Pack Smart
    • Do not pack valuables or dangerous goods in checked baggage.
    • Items with lithium-ion batteries (e.g., power banks, magneto lights) must be in hand luggage.
    • No hoverboards allowed.
    • Firearms (including toy guns) must be declared at check-in and not packed in baggage.

Firearms (including toy guns) must be declared at check-in and not packed in baggage. Our team is here to help you understand these requirements and ensure your safety.

  1. Label Your Luggage

Place a name tag with your cell number and email address on the outside and inside of your checked baggage. This helps us reunite you with your belongings quickly if they are misplaced. Your peace of mind is our priority.

  1. Protect Yourself from Unauthorized Communications

South African Airways urges customers to remain vigilant during the festive period. Unauthorised individuals may attempt to impersonate SAA and communicate through unauthorised platforms. Please refrain from sharing personal details or making any bookings outside of our verified channels.

Extra Tip for a Stress-Free Journey

Plan, keep essentials accessible, and allow extra time for airport processes. Your cooperation helps us deliver a safe, efficient, and enjoyable travel experience for everyone. If you need assistance at any point, our staff are always happy to help.

    • Passengers should proceed directly to security after check-in to avoid congestion and go to the gates at least 40 minutes before departure for domestic and 60 minutes for regional/international flights.
    • Limit cabin baggage. Only 1 small item is allowed in economy and 2 small items in business class. If cabin baggage is removed from the aircraft due to space or size, please remove valuables and dangerous goods such as lithium batteries.
    • Most important: Provide your cell phone number and email address during bookings or at check-in so that we can notify you if there are flight changes. This is important as often the airline is unable to reach customers who choose not to provide a contact number.

Issues to Highlight

    • Intoxicated or unruly passengers may be denied boarding or removed from the aircraft, if still on the ground.
    • In the air, if a passenger is disruptive, unruly, or violent while under the influence, this is considered a criminal offence. Crew members have the authority to refuse service, confiscate alcohol, and request police assistance.
    • Passenger safety and compliance with crew instructions are paramount. Our crew is trained to handle all situations with professionalism and care.
    • SAA follows the 2018 Constitutional Court ruling and the South African Police Service directive (2019), regarding adults carrying cannabis for personal use on domestic flights – under 5 grams is generally considered acceptable.
