The Eastern Cape is the second biggest province in the country and spans across largely undeveloped landscapes starting with the desert of the Great Karoo and ending with the pounding waves along the Wild Coast.
The Free State is rich agricultural country and South Africa’s bread basket, with more than 30 000 farms producing the bulk of the country’s grain. It’s also studded with small, quaint towns that might make you want to linger awhile.
Gauteng is the economic powerhouse of South Africa. It’s the country’s smallest, but richest province, containing both Johannesburg and Pretoria within its boundaries. It’s pronounced Ghow-teng, with a guttural growl.
Limpopo offers some spectacular places, with fewer visitors to crowd them. It’s the gateway to the northern parts of the Kruger National Park and also has the malaria-free Waterberg game reserves.
From beautiful beaches lapped by the warm Indian Ocean to formidable mountains, KwaZulu-Natal has a little bit of everything, all ensconced in gorgeous weather. Durban is its prime beach resort.
Mpumalanga is the most spectacular of SA’s nine provinces. The scenery is jaw dropping, as you’d expect from a place that boasts a viewpoint called God’s Window. It’s a land of mountains, valleys and dramatic twisting roads.
The Northern Cape is a huge province that spans down into the south, as well as right into the centre of the country. It’s untouched, untamed territory, and the place to go if you’re looking for absolute isolation, not to find other people and a hectic social life.
Beautiful coastlines and stunning mountains are the hallmark of the Western Cape with Cape Town as its splendid centre perched between the mountains and the sea. Heading inland quickly brings you to the winelands, with pretty villages set in picture-postcard mountain scenery.
You’ll find excellent game-viewing destinations in the North West province, along with other attractions that offer fabulous short breaks for the city slickers of Johannesburg and Pretoria.
