November 2012

We pride ourselves in being a leading player within the South African and continental market. As an integral part of the gateway to Africa, SAA has been positioned favourably time and time again for facilitating the crucial role of linking African markets with their global counterparts. We do this by providing a reliable schedule, which is backed by a commendable and reputable safety record.

As a citizen within the local and global markets, we are committed to supporting initiatives that strive towards making a difference, even if it is just by spreading the word.

One of the many examples of our commitment to local commercial markets is our long-standing commitment to supporting the South African wine industry. For the past 26 years, our annual wine selection process gives local producers the opportunity to enter their wines into a competition for wine listing on-board SAA aircrafts. The winning wines are then served in business and economy class on all SAA domestic, regional and international flights as well as in business class lounges across the country.

In our continued effort to create awareness on combating cancer, we support the Movember Movement and this month, we are focusing on changing the face of men's health and raising awareness of health issues, specifically when diagnosed with prostate and testicular cancer. According to Movember, "Men are 40% more likely to die of cancer than women in South Africa, with 1 in 6 South African men being diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime." Movember further highlights that "there is no biological disadvantage that puts men at greater risk than women and, according to recent research, up to 40% of male cancer cases could be prevented by making healthy diet and lifestyle choices," - something we should all keep in mind.

With the festive season drawing closer, we want to make sure you don't bump into any unnecessary inconveniences during your travels. We urge you to pay special attention to the Airline Awareness Corner to familiarise yourself with the important changes taking place within some of our airline partners' programs.

Boarding, reporting & gate closing time in Dubai

An important message to all our customers travelling to Dubai, effective 15 October the boarding in Dubai airports starts 45 minutes prior to flight departure and passengers are required to be at the gate no later than 45 minutes.

Most importantly, boarding gates will now close 20 minutes prior to departure, thus extending the previous 15 minute time period to give you more time.

Check - in at Dubai Airport

1) Get to the Emirates check-in counters no later than 90 minutes before your departure time. Emirates' check-in counters open no less than 3 hours prior to departure.

2) Once you have checked in, please go through security no later than 60 minutes before your flight departs. If you are holding an e-boarding pass and travelling with carry-on bags only, please go directly to security.

3) Make sure you get to your boarding gate on time. Boarding starts 45 minutes before your flight and gates close 20 minutes before departure. If you report late we will not be able to accept you for travel.

4) Please allow enough time to get to your flight - be aware that during busy travel periods or at airports with heightened security you may experience longer queues.

SAA CODE-SHARE WITH AIR MAURITIUS

The code-share agreement between South African Airways and Air Mauritius throughout Mauritius-Cape Town and Mauritius-Durban routes have been cancelled effective 28 October 2012. Please note that the code-share agreement is still in place on the Mauritius-Johannesburg route. This means that mileage accrual is no longer applicable when flying from Durban or Cape Town to Mauritius on the SAA codeshare flight numbers.
