South African Airways Certified as a 4–Star Airline for 11 Years in a Row

South African Airways has been awarded the 4–Star Airline ranking for 2013 by Skytrax, the independent, global airline rating organisation. The 4–Star Airline ranking recognises continued quality improvement in SAA onboard products and service, together with a number of changes to the home base airport customer experience in terms of product and service levels.

Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax says: "South African Airways has managed to maintain quality levels throughout the past year, and are delivering a solid product and service standard to their customers, making their 4–Star ranking well–deserved."

The Skytrax Star Ranking audit examines more than 800 areas of product and service delivery, across all areas of airport operations and the cabin experience, and demonstrates that SAA passengers can look forward to a high–quality product and service.

SAA’s 4–Star Airline ranking signifies that the airline has achieved a good standard of product across all travel categories, with standards of staff service delivery in both onboard and airport environments also being well ranked.

SAA takes an innovative leap with self–service boarding

South African Airways, in conjunction with Star Alliance and Heathrow Airport Ltd, has taken an innovative leap with the introduction of self–boarding trials in London through the use of biometric technology.

Although self–boarding is already done in Europe, SAA is the first airline to use biometric (facial) and passport recognition all the way from check–in through airport security to boarding.

Volunteers for self–boarding are enrolled by SAA at check–in, using our special "trial" desks where their passport information is scanned and a picture taken, which is checked against Advanced Passenger Profiling information.

The biometrically equipped check–in desks are located in Zone C at Heathrow International Airport, for validation and boarding at Gate 48.

This international trial solution is an industry first and an exciting opportunity for South African Airways and Star Alliance.

Drop ’n Go in London

Following the launch of tap–and–go mobile check–in, SAA UK is launching a customer self–service bag drop trial at London Heathrow.

To make their customers’ journey even smoother UK team members are trialling a new self–service bag drop kiosk at Heathrow’s Terminal 1 in collaboration with Star Alliance.

Travellers simply identify themselves using their passport, booking reference or ticket number, and they are issued with a bag tag (or tags) and a boarding card. They label their own bag and drop it off at the bag–drop machine. Easy, and it just takes seconds.

"Since it began, over 5 000 bags have been processed with an average time of 35.6 seconds and we are getting great customer feedback," says Miranda Lovegrove, SAA Airport Manager: London Heathrow.

Airlink introduces new routes

Airlink will commence scheduled services on two new over-border routes, Johannesburg to Kasane (Botswana) and Johannesburg to Vilanculos (Mozambique) from 22 March 2013. Earn Voyager Miles and enjoy convenient connections with SAA and their Star Alliance Partner airlines.

Switching off the earth for one hour

You are invited to switch off your lights during Earth Hour on Saturday, 23 March 2013, between 8:30 and 9:30 in the evening, as a symbolic act that will unite millions of people around the world in reflecting on our environmental impact and renewing our commitment to the planet.

This initiative by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is aimed at stopping the degradation of the Earth’s natural environment and building a future where people live in harmony with nature.

For Earth Hour, SAA Voyager, the frequent flyer programme of South African Airways, has put out a challenge to its members. When Voyager members elect to donate their air miles to WWF, SAA Voyager will double the Miles donated to the organisation.

"This is a great initiative where Voyager members can make a valuable contribution to our collective efforts towards saving the planet. Let us stay conscious of the effect our actions have on the world we live in," says Manoj Papa, SAA General Manager Commercial (Acting).

As the world’s largest mass participation event for the environment, WWF’s Earth Hour drives actions – both big and small – that are changing our world. Together we must turn the inspiration of one hour into actions of every hour.

There is a special power in the bold simplicity of Earth Hour – a moment shared in darkness! The beauty of it is that anyone can get involved with the switch–off, host an event to celebrate Earth Hour as best honours the planet and change to sustainable ways of living beyond the hour!

We all need to aim towards being energy efficient first and foremost, as well as investing in clean, renewable energy solutions.

This means switching off lights when leaving a room and unplugging appliances when not in use, as well as changing over to energy–efficient solutions (such as energy–saving light bulbs), using renewable energy by installing solar panels and solar water geysers, and reducing our transport energy consumption through carpooling, walking and cycling where possible.

WWF South Africa inspires us to switch off our lights during Earth Hour and switch over our mindsets and habits to more sustainable ways of living and doing business, beyond the hour.
