April 2013

From the Voyager team

It’s April – a month that has a little something for everyone. Whether you’re a fun–loving go–getter, or someone who likes to take a backseat, April is filled with an array of events to get excited over.

This is also a month where we can all reflect on a safer, healthier world for us all, as April 7 marks World Health Day – the 65th anniversary of the World Health Organisation. This global organisation focuses on significant health issues worldwide. For the past 65 years, this day is commemorated in order to create awareness about a specific health theme to highlight a priority area of concern.

The ultimate goal for this year’s World Health Day is to reduce heart attacks and strokes. The specific objectives of the campaign are to raise awareness about the causes and consequences of high blood pressure, to provide information on how to prevent high blood pressure and to incite national and local authorities to create and enable environments for healthy behaviour. Click here to find out more on this year’s Health Day theme.

As the month moves forward, there are also a range of other health issues to pay tribute to or get involved in. April 11 marks World Parkinson’s day– a day that drives awareness and raises funds for this growing neurological disorder that affects the central nervous system. World Hemoglobin Day will take place on 17 April to advocate a global effort to ensure appropriate care and treatment for a disease that is the oldest known genetic bleeding disorder. Immunisation Day kicks off on 24 April to drive awareness about different vaccines that are effective in different diseases and on 25 April, South Africa brings the issue of Malaria to light with National Malaria Day.

It’s time we work together and get involved as we move towards a safer, healthier world. For more information on these health days, visit http://www.altiusdirectory.com/Society.

New York's JFK Airport lounge changes

As a result of the Terminal 4 renovations and new security check point at New York’s JFK, the SWISS Lounge that we utilise for our Business Class customers, Lifetime/Platinum Voyager members and Star Alliance Gold members will now be located post–security.

While this promises to be a significant enhancement for our departing customers that have access to this lounge, it will restrict our arriving customers from utilising this facility. In other words, we will no longer have an arrivals facility at the John F. Kennedy Airport for these customers.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

AVIANCA Inaugurates new VIP Lounge at the Eldorado International Airport

Avianca is proud to unveil its brand new VIP Lounge in the International Terminal of the Eldorado Airport in Bogotá, providing a superior service to members of the LifeMiles Frequent Flyer Programme and Business Class travellers.

Eldorado is one of the top three airports for passenger and cargo transportation in Latin America and has become a major hub as well as a key transit point on the continent for travellers in the region– hence the importance of this VIP Lounge.

Users of Avianca, TACA Airlines and Aerogal will enjoy a private luxury paradise with over 2,000 square meters of services and innovations that offer travellers work, entertainment and rest areas. There is also a family lounge for travellers flying with kids.

  • LifeMiles Silver, Gold and Diamond Elite members; Star Alliance Gold members; Priority Pass members and/or travellers in Business Class can access the Gold Elite Lounge.

The new VIP Lounge is located on the third floor of the new Eldorado International Terminal which quadruples the size of the old Avianca VIP Lounge. It includes special areas to work, socialize, relax, eat and even freshen up. In line with the LifeMiles Membership levels, the lounge has the capacity to simultaneously serve 670 travellers, with 505 travellers in the Gold Elite Zone and 165 people in the Diamond Elite Lounge.

The VIP Lounge is open from 4:30 a.m. in the morning until 11:00 p.m. at night. Among the amenities and services on offer, the following features stand out:

  • The Work Area– visitors have access to Wi–Fi; connections for laptops, mobile devices, computers and tablets as well as phones for local calls.
  • The Entertainment Zone– equipped with TVs and access to news, sports and documentary channels. There is also a large selection of newspapers as well as national and international magazines.
  • The Rest Area– specially designed with ergonomic chairs and illumination systems, which enhance relaxation. It also offers travellers a zone with toilets and showers.

These are complemented by The Food Area, where travellers can enjoy hot and cold menus, drinks and coffee.

The Diamond Elite Lounge covers 700 square meters and offers a differentiated VIP service that includes an exclusive space for LifeMiles Diamond Elite members, passengers travelling on full fare and those who redeemed their ticket in the ‘All Seats’ category – and with reservation in Business–C Class.

TAM Terminates from Star Alliance

Our member carrier, TAM, will leave Star Alliance and move to Oneworld by the end of the first quarter of 2014. The merger between LAN and TAM was approved by the respective Chilean and Brazilian courts under the condition that the merged LATAM Group could not be in the same alliance as its closest competitor, Avianca–TACA.

Since Avianca-TACA is a Star Alliance member, it was clear that TAM would need to leave Star Alliance within the timeframe set by the court.

Have a look at the FAQ below:

Q) When exactly will TAM leave Star Alliance?

A) TAM is planning to leave Star Alliance sometime in the second quarter of 2014. An exact date is expected to be announced by end of 2013.

Q) What does this mean for Star Alliance customers?

A) Until TAM actually leaves Star Alliance, nothing changes for the customer. TAM continues to be a Star Alliance member providing all Alliance customer benefits. Both TAM and Star Alliance will develop a smooth transition plan, to ensure that customer benefits can be offered for a certain time even after TAM leaves Star Alliance.

Q) Until when can I collect Miles when travelling on TAM?

A) TAM plans to remain in Star Alliance at least until the end of the first quarter of 2014. Until then collecting Miles on flights operated by TAM will be possible.

Q) Until when can I redeem Miles for TAM flights?

A) Redemption bookings on flights operated by TAM will be possible at least until their final exit date from Star Alliance. A contingency plan will be in place to ensure that any ticket issued prior to the leaving date will be accepted for travel.

Virgin Atlantic introduces a dedicated domestic service

This UK domestic service will all be branded Virgin Atlantic but with a twist: alongside their Virgin Atlantic branding, they’ll also be known as Virgin Atlantic Little Red.

This brand identity allows the new services to have the same DNA as Virgin Atlantic, benefiting from the huge brand presence that Virgin Atlantic carries, whilst allowing the freedom with the product. This suggests both the nature of the offer, together with the simple and efficient experience.

Little Red allows the airline to differentiate the brand from the long haul services. It’s cheeky, playful and allows the service to vary in its approach with the offering.

The new domestic services will be starting in phases; with 4 daily services to Manchester starting on 31 March and the first 3 of 6 daily services to Edinburgh starting on 5 April. 3 daily services to Aberdeen will be commencing on 9 April and then the final 3 of the Edinburgh services will take place on 15 April.

Little Red flights arrive and depart from London Heathrow Terminal 1, Manchester Airport Terminal 3, Edinburgh International Airport and Aberdeen International Airport.

AIRCRAFT TYPE - The domestic aircraft will be operated by narrow–body A320s with 174 seats on–board. They will be branded Virgin Atlantic and will be painted with the usual airline colours.

Following the launch of Little Red services to Manchester, Aberdeen and Edinburgh, Virgin Atlantic confirmed that our Frequent Flyer members will be entitled to earn and spend their miles on these new domestic routes.

Voyager members can redeem 20 000 Miles to book a return on any of the above domestic routes. The domestic services are made up of 1 cabin, so T class will be the redemption booking class for these flights.

Members will earn 750 Miles per sector.

BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE - The Little Red checked–in luggage allowance is 23kg. Premium Economy passengers and members connecting to a Virgin Atlantic long–haul flight can bring an extra bag of up to 23kg. Upper Class passengers can bring three bags of up to 32kg.
