Voyager and WWF Desert Challenge

     SAA Voyager-Best Western

Voyager and WWF bring you the ultimate test

Do you have a thirst for adventure? Do you thrive on challenges that test you both mentally and physically? Voyager is giving away a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, made just for you. We’re giving away an entry ticket to the Worldwide Fund For Nature desert challenge worth R80 000, through a lucky draw, providing the entrant meets the minimum requirements.

This exclusive WWF Challenge takes place from the 15th – 22nd October 2017 and is not for the faint-hearted. The challenge will see a daring group of 20 participants test themselves against the elements to cycle, hike, paddle and abseil for seven days through the spectacular landscapes of the /Ai-/Ais-Richtersveld World Heritage Site spanning South Africa and Namibia.

This WWF Challenge provides access to the remote, unexplored wilderness of the Richtersveld. The Richtersveld boasts some of the most spectacular desert scenery on earth, with high mountains and dramatic desert landscapes giving way to the deep Fish River Canyon and the spectacular Orange River.

A range of unique and strange plants can be found, such as the “halfmens” tree that, from a distance, resembles a human head. The local Nama people revere these human-like trees as the embodiment of their ancestors: half-human, half-plant. The Nama people are an ancient people who are a living example of a way of life that has survived thousands of years in the isolation of this remote place.

Entrants can look forward to spotting predators such as leopards and brown hyena. One is also likely to come across klipspringer, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, grey rhebok, kudu, gemsbok, steenbok and duiker, as well as baboons and smaller mammals.

The group will be joined by WWF staff and other experts who will uncover the wonders of the desert, from its unique ecology, archaeology and astronomy to understanding the culture of the local Nama people. While the challenge will be physically demanding, comfortable nights are assured. A strong support team will accompany the Challenge including a medical doctor, massage therapist, bike mechanic and guides.

Anyone who wishes to enter or buy an entry ticket needs to consider a few points: as a fitness guide, participants should be able to run a half marathon in under 2.5 hours, be comfortable on a mountain bike at the level of gravel roads, be able to paddle a kayak, and be willing to abseil a 100m drop with assistance from professionals.

As a loyal Voyager member, you will receive a bonus entry into the draw!
