Etosha: Waterhole wildlife encounters in Namibia’s greatest sanctuary
Accessible, well-equipped and ideal for self-drive holidays, Namibia’s Etosha National Park offers all the flexibility and facilities you need for a family safari.
Etosha is home to hundreds of mammal, bird and reptile species, including ostrich and black rhino. The park lies around a salt pan so large that it can be seen from space: in the rainy season this pan fills with water, attracting a cloud of flamingos, while around the edges, springbok demonstrate their strength by ‘pronking’. Take a night drive to see lions hunting, or spend an evening leopard-spotting around the waterholes. Look up and you may also see the Kari Bustard, the world’s heaviest flying bird.
Another exciting must-see is the so-called Haunted or Ghost Forest at the East of Okaujuejo, where the moringa trees have morphed into strange shapes.
There’s a great choice of accommodation within Etosha - from basic camping, and chalets overlooking floodlit waterholes, to exclusive luxury camps. And with a wealth of restaurants, shops, swimming pools and petrol stations, it’s truly family-friendly.
