Safari in Malawi

Safari Malawi

Liwonde: Hippo heaven

Although comparatively small (580 sq km), Malawi’s number one wildlife destination is hugely popular. With the breathtaking Shire River flowing along its western border, Liwonde offers boat safaris as well as game drives and walking safaris.

And there’s plenty to see. The river is teeming with over 2,000 hippos, plus crocs-aplenty,  and it’s a mecca for thirsty elephants. You can go rhino tracking, and visit the fascinating rhino sanctuary here. Liwonde also attracts magnificent birdlife, from raptors to bee-eaters: as you take in the sunset, you’re likely to see Pel’s Fishing Owl along the river’s edge.

There are also leopards, baboons, hyenas, zebra, warthogs, various kinds of antelope and the occasional visiting lion. Stay at rustic lodges like Mvuu, set in the wilderness and surrounded by giant baobab trees, or the tented Liwonde Safari Camp.
