Voyager programme overview

Moving up in the world

Miles are the currency of the Voyager programme. On enrolment to the programme, you will receive numerous benefits and opportunities as a Voyager member. After flying three sectors or three credit card transactions on your SAA Voyager credit card, you will receive a membership welcome pack comprising your personalised card.

Your PIN will provide access to our various self-service facilities. Members must protect their PIN, as it is the key to their account. For security reasons, your PIN will not be disclosed over the telephone. To obtain a PIN, use our website or call the Voyager call centre. If you need to request a new PIN, send us either an email or fax (27 11 978 1551).

As an active member you will receive a Voyager newsletter, outlining the happenings of the programme and great promotional opportunities. Active members will also receive a mileage summary, outlining your activity with us on a quarterly basis.

Tier status and benefits

Now earning Tier status is just so much easier. Tier status is earned in two ways, namely: earning Tier Miles or via sector tiering. Voyager offers five Tier status levels – Blue, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Lifetime Platinum. The higher your membership status, the more privileges you can enjoy. The number of Tier Miles or sectors you fly during a calendar year will determine your Tier status for the remainder of the qualifying year and the following calendar year.

Earning Miles

Earning Miles has never been so simple. Miles are updated in your Voyager account when you fly on South African Airways or use the services of our partners. Do remember to quote your membership number for accurate crediting of your Voyager Miles.

Voyager Miles vs. Tier Miles

Miles are the currency of the Voyager programme and are earned whenever you fly with South African Airways or our partner airlines, and when using the services of our non-airline partners such as hotels, lifestyle, financial and car hire companies.

Tier Miles determine membership status each year and help you to progress to Silver, Gold, Platinum and Lifetime Platinum Status. Every time you fly on an eligible flight we will allocate Tier Miles to your account.

Earning Tier Miles

You earn one Tier Mile for each Mile flown on eligible flights. The more you fly on South African Airways and Star Alliance partners, the more Tier Miles you earn. Tier Miles are accumulated for one year from 1 January to 31 December. Your status is valid for the rest of the year, in which it is earned, and for the whole of the following calendar year. For example, if you earn your Silver Tier status in June 2006, you will remain on this tier until December 2007.

Earning Tier status through sector tiering

Tier status can also be earned through sector tiering, by simply flying the required sectors in Premium Economy (Y) or Business class in any of the three distance based zones. Only flights operated by South African Airways count towards sector tiering.

Earning Miles

As part of the programme, you automatically earn Miles from simply doing what you often do anyway. Although these Miles do not count towards Tier status they will however assist in increasing your balance and thereby your ability to obtain awards. Earning Miles has never been so simple; they can be earned as follows:

  • Base Miles – earn these by using any one of Voyager’s world-class partners
  • Bonus Miles – earned from promotional offers. Many types of Bonus Miles are allocated:
    • Enrolment Bonus Miles – you will receive 2 500 Miles once your first activity is recorded on your new Voyager account
    • Business and First class Bonus Miles – when travelling on South African Airways, you are entitled to a class bonus of 25% when travelling in Business class and 50% when travelling in First class.
    • Tier activity Bonus Miles – your Tier status is always recognised and rewarded. If you are a Silver, Gold, Platinum or Lifetime Platinum member, your Tier activity Bonus Miles will be a percentage of the actual Miles flown. The number of Miles earned is dependent on your Tier status.
    • Special promotions Bonus Miles – you may receive extra Miles during special offers which the programme may present from time to time.
    • Appreciation Bonus Miles – in order to say thank you for your loyal support and to recognise and reward our elite members for flying on South African Airways, you will receive additional Bonus Miles. 2 000 Miles will be allocated to your account for every 10 000 Tier Miles flown on South African Airways only.
    • Threshold Bonus Miles – every time you qualify for a higher Tier status, we thank you again. The number of Miles allocated varies dependant on the Tier status achieved.

Missing Miles

If your Miles are not credited for any reason, they can be credited provided the relevant documentation is submitted timeously. It is essential to keep all the relevant documentation including original boarding passes, copies of airline tickets, copies of e-ticket receipts, car rental and hotel invoices/documentation. Miles earned can only be credited for a period of six months from the date of transaction.

Expiry of Miles

Miles are valid for three years after the year in which they were earned. Miles due to expire will always be reflected on your mileage summary. Awards can be requested before Miles expire and used within 6 months for Air awards and 3 months for Non-Air awards from date of issue. However, if they are not used within this period they will be forfeited. Miles will expire each year on 31 March. However, if by the end of the preceding calendar year, you had flown a minimum of 5 000 Tier Miles on South African Airways only or flown 3 000 Miles on SA Express, Miles due to expire in the current year will be carried over to the next year and will remain valid for a further 12 months.

Spending Miles

The Voyager Miles you earned ultimately allow you to reward yourself and to join our world of opportunities and enter into the land of horizons. You can exchange accumulated Miles for benefits, such as flights, car rental, leisure and lifestyle benefits. Your Miles can be used for flight awards as follows:

  • AnyDay awards – require more Miles, but they have no restrictions. If a seat is available in the appropriate class you can reserve it for your Any Day award. Highly recommended for those urgent flights.
  • SuperPlus awards - give you access to an economy reservation bucket which contains 25 - 30% of our total capacity. The SuperPlus award is applicable to SAA operated flights only and therefore excludes codeshare, SA Express and Airlink flights.
  • MileageKeeper awards – as the term implies, less Voyager Miles are required for these awards. These awards are however subject to limited seat allocations and are capacity controlled.
  • Upgrade awards - may only be used to the next higher class, by simply purchasing economy class tickets on qualifying fares (Y, B, M and K class) for example, from Economy to Business class. Members cannot upgrade further to First Class – neither with Miles nor cash.
