THE OLYMPIC SEASON IS UPON US

Tune in with the rest of the world and catch the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games on Friday, 27th July. As a proud supporter of Team South Africa, SAA has truly taken Africa to the world by jetting them off to the London Olympics in style. And what better way to show our countries unity and support than by painting a plane in our sporting heroes’ honour? The Paint a Plane competition, which was open to the youth, was a run–away success and the perfect way to kick off the greatest sporting event in history.

Our winner was Miss Adri le Roux – a first year design student at Stellenbosch University. Her design captured a sense of South Africa pride with the colours of our nation’s flag shining bright for the world to see.

We also have another reason to celebrate in this jubilee season. South African Airways has been voted the Best Airline in Africa, winning the esteemed Skytrax Award for the 10th year in a row! But that’s not all… we were also able to take home the Best Staff Service in Africa award for the 3rd consecutive year.

SAA thanks you, the public, for your vote of confidence. We will continue to strive above and beyond to give you the very best travel experience.

Destination of the month – Munich / Oktoberfest

The big city atmosphere and rural charm, art treasures, customs and high-tech: This very special "Munich mix" has helped the capital of Bavaria to achieve world renown. But what adds the final touch to the city’s popularity is the drink that is associated with Munich throughout the world: beer. Internationally Munich is undoubtedly the Number One beer metropolis.

Oktoberfest, a festival of Munich’s beer and one of the Bavarian capital’s trade marks, is a household term in all parts of the world. And who doesn’t dream of experiencing the original in Munich sometime in their life or at least of visiting the "beer Mecca" one day?

Visit Oktoberfest from 22nd September until 7th October 2012. How do you get there? SAA flies daily overnight nonstop from Johannesburg to Munich.

Did you know that the first Oktoberfest was held in October of 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese? Princess Therese is the namesake for the location of Oktoberfest today, the Theresienwiese ("Wiese" means meadow). Locals also fondly refer to the Oktoberfest as die Wiesn.

Nelson Mandela Day

South African Airways has partnered with the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory (Mandela Foundation) for the 3rd consecutive year to commemorate Tata Madiba’s birthday.

In the first year, SAA flew 92 children from Qunu and Mvezo in the Eastern Cape to celebrate Tata’s 92nd birthday at the Centre of Memory. Last year, 93 children were selected from all nine of South Africa’s provinces to join in the annual celebrations to reflect on the lessons learnt from Tata’s life.

This year, SAA flew a total of 19 youth representatives from Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban, East London, Polokwane, as well as from Zimbabwe, Zambia, Dakar, the United States, Malawi, India, Accra, Kinshasa and Maputo to Johannesburg where they participated in a Mandela Youth Day programme, held on Saturday 14 July 2012 at the Johannesburg Mayoral Chambers.
