SAA operations uninterrupted despite industrial action

Johannesburg. 21 February 2009

South African Airways (SAA) operations remain uninterrupted despite industrial action by the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu).

SAA implemented a full contingency plan to minimise disruptions to passengers after Satawu embarked on industrial action, yesterday, Friday. 20 February.

The industrial action follows a dispute declared last week by Satawu. The trade union is demanding that the payment of retention premiums be extended to all employees, and that SAA immediately halts the use of labour brokers. SAA views the strike as unprotected and has filed a notice of motion for an interdict with the Labour Court which will be heard on Monday, 23 February 2009.

Nevertheless SAA remains committed to continued engagement with union leadership in an effort to resolve the current impasse. The airline trusts that the union will appreciate the importance of such continued engagement.

SAA will keep customers informed on an ongoing basis regarding how the strike may affect operations.
