South African Airways (SAA) today brought an application in the Labour Court against Satawu and its members participating in the industrial action under way at the airline.
The Labour Court has today granted the order which interdicts staff members who are participating in the Satawu strike from any unlawful conduct. This means that they cannot intimidate or threaten people in any way. As a result, with immediate effect any violence, intimidation or damage to property will mean that the striking staff members will be in contempt of court.
Further, the Labour Court order states that the striking employees can no longer picket and strike at the entrances to Airways Park, ie, where they are currently located.
SAA roundly condemns the tactics of intimidation and violence which were practised yesterday by some of the people who took part in the industrial action. SAA has reiterated that the safety of staff is and has always been paramount.
After almost two weeks of industrial action, the operations of the airline have not been affected. SAA implemented a contingency plan at the start of the industrial action on Friday, 20 February 2009, which has ensured that the flight schedule has continued to run smoothly over the past 14 days. SAA’s on-time performance remains at excellent levels.
Several meetings have been held between SAA and representatives from Satawu, and further discussions are scheduled. SAA management remains committed to discussions with labour to find a speedy solution to the industrial action.
The airline will continue with the implementation of its contingency plan to ensure that flights run according to schedule. No flight delays are currently expected.
