SAA arranges a fun time for precious cargo

Unaccompanied minors travelling during holidays will be entertained with educational activities

Johannesburg, 10 December 2012 – South African Airways (SAA) is planning a memorable travel experience for unaccompanied minors during the December and January holidays.

Every year, the airline transports close to 6000 unaccompanied minors during the school holidays. These children are between the ages of 5 and 12 years old.

“We take the security of the children very seriously as our passengers. They are escorted every step of the way – from saying goodbye to their loved ones at the airport, to boarding the plane. They are always boarded last and have special paperwork on a fun pouch around their necks so that they are always highly visible”, adds Kim Thipe, SAA’s Head of Marketing.

This year, the airline is working together with South African National Parks and SA Rugby to create fun and exciting programmes during their travel. The airline has a dedicated brightly painted unaccompanied minors’ area at the O. R. Tambo International Airport and every year at peak travel days, the kids are entertained with fun activities.

“The theme this year is ‘baby animals in the wild’. The aim of entertaining the children is not only for fun, but to also have an educational aspect to hosting them. We have taken pictures from the Kruger National Park which will be used to decorate the interior of the area”, adds Thipe.

Other entertainment for the children will include icing and decorating animal faces and a meet and greet with the SA Rugby mascot who will be handing out toys and other interesting rugby items. The older children will also be entertained with the newly released Kids in the Kruger educational and the SA Rugby Bokkie DVD.

Activity schedule is as follows:
• 07, 10 December 2012 from 08:00 12:00 and from 14:00 – 18:00
• 04, 10 January 2012 between 08:00am – 12:00pm and from 14:00pm – 18:00

Flight bookings for minors may be done directly via the call centre on 0861 606 606, or at the airport, and with any travel agent.
