Special Services

Engineering

  • SAAT’s engineering specialists ensure that the organisation maintains its reputation as a centre of excellence in aviation engineering.
  • Engineering teams, highly qualified in each of their disciplines, provide a range of services to local and international airlines. These include the development of standards and specifications. In addition, Engineering performs engine reliability monitoring as well as the control, evaluation, development and incorporation of mandatory and product improvement modifications.
  • Engineering staff attend advanced training courses, locally and at the Boeing and Airbus factories, keeping up to date with international best practices, in aviation engineering.
  • This enables them to reduce aircraft turnaround time while producing work of the highest international standards. An extensive Technical Library provides engineering staff with constantly updated documents and technical information including thousands of manuals, both in hard copy and online. This information includes a Master Engineering List, a Modification Registry, Aviation Directives, Service Letters and Bulletins.
  • Design staff provides cabin and galley layouts, seat designs and cockpit upgrades, including avionics.
  • Technical Information is responsible for control, review, distribution safekeeping and procurement of all Technical manuals, forms and documentation
  • Aircraft Livery drawings.

An extensive Technical Library provides engineering staff with constantly updated documents and technical information including thousands of manuals, both in hard copy and online.   • SAA Technical, as one of the world's leading Aircraft Maintenance Organisations, places great emphasis on quality.
  • Regular audits ensure that policies are adhered to and that the quality of work performed conforms strictly to standards prescribed by manufacturers and regulatory authorities, including SACAA, FAA and EASA. Safety indicators are closely monitored.
  • SAA Technical believes the philosophy of Quality at Source and has implemented inspection to achieve this.
     

 

 Supply Chain

To take full responsibility of Supply Chain Management for SAAT with strong focus on Procurement; Inventory Management; Legal and Contracts Management, Materials Management; Logistics; Supplier development and BEE Portfolios.

  • To take full responsibility of Supply Chain Management for SAAT with strong focus on Procurement; Inventory Management; Legal and Contracts Management, Materials Management, Logistics; Supplier Development and BEE portfolios.
  • Responsible for all procurement related to aircraft material, spare parts and specialist aircraft maintenance services, component breakdown spares, consumables and modification kits.
  • To establish procurement direction and management of supply chain for procurement activities that will result in the lowest total cost of ownership.
  • Interface with appropriate functional groups throughout the organisation to support the strategic objectives requiring supplier involvement and the development of certified and emerging suppliers. 
  • Optimum value and efficient by adopting best purchasing practices in Supply Chain Management, ensuring where possible that open and fair competition has prevailed.
  • Strives for continuous improvement in our critical business areas and seeks to establish relationships with suppliers that are passionate in their quest for better quality, price and service.
  • Responsible for proactively and strategically develop, implement and control logistics systems to great seamless flow of goods and services throughout the organisation and improve customer service levels.
  • Warehousing of the total inventory (spare and tooling) is controlled by a sophisticated inventory controlled computer system, monitoring individual inventory movement and replenishment.

  • Shipping (Air Freight, Sea Freight and Dangerous Goods (DGR) and sale of all surplus and redundant components, engines.
  • Air Suspended Truck with qualified drivers to Transport Aircraft Engines anywhere in South Africa.
  • SAAT is a member of the International Airline Technical Pool (IATP) and have a full Aircraft recovery kit available on site.

 

Maintenance Planning

Maintenance planning is a department within SAAT operations that is responsible for planning, it is comprised of Engineering planning, Aircraft Routing, Aircraft Returns & Archives and Business systems & IT supports subsections.

 

These sections maintains an effective and efficient management information systems in ensuring and controlling maintenance activities in accordance with organizational, manufactures and Aviation Authority's requirements.

 

Engineering Planning

This section is responsible for development of the maintenance programs, procedures and determination of limitations as prescribed by the maintenance planning document (MPD) and the regulatory authorities (FAA, EASA & SACAA) for SAAT to maintain its position as an MRO and maintain airworthiness & safety of the fleet maintained by SAAT. Engineering planning ensures a continuous process of continued maintenance and implementation of maintenance instructions within SAAT for correct maintenance to be carried out on aircraft maintained by SAAT. Below are some of the key functions of this section.

 

 

  • Development of maintenance program for each aircraft type maintained by SAAT.
  • Manage the Continued Airworthiness and optimization of the Maintenance Programs in order to deliver an effective Reliability Programs, Detailed Work Plan, Subcontract Co-ordination of CAMO and proper control of approved data from the OEM..
  • Asign limitations as prescribed by OEM’s and vendors for all maintenance tasks.
  • Review work packages, special inspections, maintenance requirements, AD’s, SB’s, modifications or any “out of phase” work.
  • Implement additional maintenance requirements based on reliability, historical data and history.
  • Resolve maintenance queries and render logistical support to other departments by liaising with engineering, MCC and QA
  • Compile work scopes and coordinate required maintenance with external customers.
  • Extract information from previous operators and OEM documentation for the development of maintenance program and alignment to SAAT maintenance systems and procedures.

 

Production Planning
 
This section is responsible for the generation of work packages while ensuring that correct aircraft receives maintenance at the opportune time in the most cost saving manner with regards to downtime, manpower and material without affecting quality and safety standards. Production planning generates task cards for all routine and special tasks to be carried out on the fleet maintained by SAAT, while ensuring that mandatory work like AD’s, SB’s and EB’s that have been approved are complied with at the correct time and also ensuring that applicable modifications are incorporated when required. Below are some of the key functions of this sections.
 
 
 
  • Scheduling, forecasting and plan short, mid and long term maintenance events like Weekly checks, A, C, Structural (D) & ADHOC checks.
  • Controlling, tracking and controlling of component and engine movement.
  • Distribute technical instructions and work packages to ensure that all aircraft receives required maintenance as the most opportune time.
  • Plan and determine critical paths of events with regards to downtime, manpower and material availability.
  • Monitor work packages, special inspections, maintenance requirements, AD’s, SB’s, modifications or any “out of phase” work.
  • Perform and control the pre-planning process and critical path analysis of all major maintenance events (CKC, CKD and Special Projects) to support maintenance with the accomplishment of maintenance events within the scheduled downtime.
  • Render logistical support to production areas, production control and workshops.
  • Chair regular meetings held with all stakeholders with an aim of ensuring availability of sufficient resources and to deal with contingencies
  • Coordinate maintenance events with internal stakeholders and external customers.
  • Monitor the check package during maintenance checks and ensure that all documents pertaining to the check package are accounted for
     
Aircraft Routing
  
  • Ensure proper aircraft routing to meet designated flight operations schedule
  • Scheduled maintenance requirements with minimal impact to operations
  • Develop recovery plans in an event whereby flight operations are affected by delays, incidence or cancellations.
  • Performs forward planning, flight hours and cycle management.
  • Maintain stationery for inflight usage by crew

 

Aircraft Returns & archives

 

  • Is responsible for the induction of new and second hand leased aircraft into the SAAT MIS by communicating with all stakeholders and coordinating the documentation requirements.
  • Aircraft Returns coordinates the process of exiting aircraft by collating and compiling all the necessary documentation to facilitate the ease of return to lessors. This is done by liaising with lessor representatives on site and fleet management to meet return conditions in accordance with lease agreements.
  • During the lease term of aircrafts, audits are requested annually by lessors. Aircraft Returns coordinates the auditors’ visits for physical aircraft inspections as well as collates documentation required for a successful audit.
  • On a monthly basis listings of Airworthiness directives, Service Bulletins and Components are provided to the various customers as per contractual agreements.
  • Performs component inventory management from the induction of an aircraft to the exit, to ensure that the MIS is reflective of the current location of components on the various fleets.
  • This entails resolving all queries and anomalies to align the MIS to be current , as well as updating the system with installations and removals of components
  • Provides a safe and secure environment that houses maintenance documentation as per the various aviation authorities’ requirements.
  • Archives receives, compiles and stores documentation on a daily basis and provides various customers with copies of the documentation as requested.
 
Business Systems and IT
 
 
  • Audit data as created by maintenance planning
  • Support SAAT on MIS issues.
  • Ensures that maintenance planning processes meet business requirements
  • Ensures that all technical instructions are in line with IT requirements

 

Technical Training

  • Quality, cost-effective training, ranging from apprentice to advanced aircraft systems training on airframe, engines and components by a highly qualified complement of instructors is accomplished.
  • Training is provided at main base, line stations and to other organisations, locally and worldwide.
