SAA operations continue to be unaffected ahead of busy weekend

JOHANNESBURG. 27 February 2009.

South African Airways (SAA)’s operations continue to be unaffected by the current industrial action ahead of a busy weekend.

The airline implemented its contingency plan at the start of the industrial action last Friday (20 February) which has ensured that the flight schedule has continued to run smoothly over the past week. As the weekend is traditionally a busy time for the airline, we urge passengers to get to the airport a little earlier than normal to avoid any inconvenience.

The industrial action follows a dispute declared by South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU), relating to the following issues: a demand that the payment of retention bonuses be extended to all employees, and that SAA immediately halts the use of labour brokers.

Following further meetings with the union today, SAA management has again committed itself to ongoing negotiations with labour to find a speedy solution to the present industrial action.

The airline will continue with the implementation of its contingency plan to ensure that flights run according to schedule over the weekend, which is traditionally a busy period.
