Japanese Users: how to change browser settings to Western European (ISO)

ie_logo Internet Explorer 9

Internet Explorer has an Auto-Select feature for displaying languages correctly. Some web pages include information about what encoding to use when displaying the page; the Auto-Select feature enables Internet Explorer to determine the appropriate language encoding for a webpage even if the page itself doesn't specify which encoding to use. To turn on Auto-Select:

  • From the View menu, select Encoding, and then Western European (ISO)

Note: In Internet Explorer 9, to make the File, View, and Edit menus at the top visible, press Alt once.

You may be prompted to download a language support component; if so, click Download.

You will have to clear your Caches and Cookies, then close your browser and restart Internet Explorer for the change to take effect.

Adding a language does not guarantee that your computer has a font it can use to display web pages in the selected language.

firefox logo Mozilla Firefox 3.0

To set Firefox to automatically try to display the correct character encoding within a particular language for web pages:

1.From the View menu, select Character Encoding, and then Western (ISO 8859-1).

To manually select the correct character encoding for a page:

1.From the View menu, select Character Encoding, and then More Encodings.

2.From the list that appears, select the correct language family, and then the correct character set.

You will have to clear your Caches and Cookies, then close your browser and restart Mozilla Firefox for the change to take effect.

If you have a different browser than those listed above, please refer to the help in your browser for information about how to enable cookies.
